Design with inclusivity in mind

Why design with inclusivity in mind?

When we design for disability first, we often stumble upon solutions that are better for everyone.

- Kat Holmes (Mismatch: How Inclusion Shapes Design)

  • Accessibility for All: Inclusive design ensures that products and services are accessible to everyone, including individuals with disabilities. This means considering various needs and providing alternative ways to interact with content, such as screen readers for visually impaired users or keyboard navigability for those who cannot use a mouse.
  • Legal and Ethical Responsibility: As a university there are legal requirements and ethical considerations that mandate the creation of accessible and inclusive products. Ensuring compliance with accessibility standards, PSBAR 2018 and the Equality Act 2010 avoids legal repercussions and demonstrates a commitment to social responsibility
  • Enhanced User Experience: Inclusive design improves the overall user experience by making products easier to use for everyone. When we design with inclusivity in mind, we reduce barriers and create a more seamless and enjoyable experience for all users

How can you design with inclusivity in mind?

  • User research: Undertake research to understand the needs and challenges of diverse user groups – internally and externally. This identifies areas of exclusion and supports with the development of inclusive solutions
  • Accessibility standards: Carry out an accessibility audit to see how compliant your product is or ensure it is part of the foundation of a new product. Speak to the team to find out more about ensuring accessibility is built into the procurement process
