Find out what trainings are on offer with the AI and ML Competency Centre
The AI and ML Competency Centre offers training that university members can join at any level of expertise, guiding them through a journey to build confidence in understanding the capabilities and limitations of AI systems, and in selecting the most effective tools for tasks in their practice. We do this through workshops that anybody at the University can join and we also offer custom training to departments and colleges aimed at teachers, students and administrators. Our aim is to ensure sustainable learning, enabling participants to become autonomous, self-directed users of the technology who can also share their knowledge with others through, for example, communities of practice.
For Michaelmas Term 2024, we will offer sessions that are designed for a broad audience who may be unfamiliar with AI or would like to learn more about the field in general.
The list below shows upcoming trainings from all the Competency Centres, including the AI and ML Competency Centre:
We offer AI training sessions to colleges and departments during term time, which can be tailored for students to learn how to apply AI practically in their studies, as well as for tutors who may want to explore the range of available tools. These sessions are best conducted in person at the colleges and typically last between 1 to 1.5 hours. Please contact us if you are interested. We have already delivered similar workshops to St John’s and St Cross Colleges or in departments like the medical school or law.

Unlocking AI for More Productive Study: Key AI Tools and Strategies for Their Use
Everyone’s heard of ChatGPT, but the world of AI chatbots is much broader and rapidly evolving. This one-hour session is designed to introduce you to the “big four” AI chatbots— especially Claude and ChatGPT and other exciting applications such Elicit for literature reviews and Google’s NotebookLM for AI-assisted notetaking. Each of these tools has their unique strengths and limitations. They also offer different features and modes of interaction that fit various tasks and personal preferences. We’ll explore how they differ, their best use cases, and what to consider when choosing the right chatbot for your needs.
You’ll learn how to select an AI product based on its underlying model, specialized features, and when to consider alternative AI tools that might better suit specific tasks.
This session will cover:
Strengths and limitations of Large Language Models and tools built on them
Strategies for using AI tools to support reading, writing and notetaking
ChatGPT for data analysis, conversation coach, and reading assistant
Claude as a paper summariser and creator of visual overviews
For 2025, we plan to introduce more customised training once we have identified the specific skill sets people need, whether technical or non-technical. This insight will come from our various interactions with projects and individuals.
To assist with this, we have an expression of interest form if you are considering a course or training session you would like us to deliver. If we are unable to provide it within our team's expertise, we can direct you to the appropriate resources or bring in external providers to deliver the content or training.
