The UX Centre of excellence is developing a design system for the University to drive quality and consistency across our digital estate and enable prototyping throughout the development cycle of digital products.
Our user research has shown that there is a greater need for a prototyping tool than front-end templates and guidance, as many sites and systems are developed and/or delivered using existing front-end systems and component libraries; whereas the provision for prototyping within digital projects is low in terms of both skills and tools. Therefore our initial priority for the design system is a tool to support and facilitate prototyping. This is will be beneficial throughout the product development process and across a range of roles:
Business Analysis
- Reduce timeframe and learning curve for prototyping and wire framing
- Easier to communicate the solution ideas with stakeholders
- Reuse of prototypes across multiple projects
Quality Assurance
- Easier to understand the solution, reducing time and effort of test planning
- Do not have to retest common UX challenges and solutions

- Easier to understand project progress
- Easier to articulate project progress to stakeholders
Business Change Management
- Easier to understand the design solution and give feedback to the project team

- Clearer understanding of design solutions, which saves development costs and improves quality
