Over 100 colleagues’ cyber security skills boosted through competency centre

Provided by the Cyber Security Competency Centre, CISMP is a funded, in-person training course, which is externally accredited by the British Computer Society. Staff from across all divisions and 11 colleges have taken the training to sharpen their cyber security skills to engage with best practice for keeping people and data safe.

Around 50 of these recently attended a meet-up hosted by the competency centre, to discuss cyber security trends, initiatives and updates. Attendees also networked and learned from each other, continuing to strengthen the cyber security network across the University.

Tony Brett, Chief Information Security Officer, and Head of the Cyber Security Competency Centre, who hosted the event said: “Cyber security is everyone’s responsibility. By boosting knowledge across the University, we can build a stronger network of experts who are best placed to educate, implement new strategies, and respond to risks and incidents.

“Cyber security threats continue to change and evolve. We discussed how this is manifesting, and how colleges, faculties, and departments are responding. We looked at a recent incident in the History faculty and how identification, containment, analysis, business continuity, and recovery were approached.”

The Cyber Security Competency Centre launched in February 2023 as part of Digital Transformation. It provides free consultation, staff training, and technical support to help protect your unit, people or project. Future CISMP training events are taking place on 10 - 13 March 2025 at Linacre College; and 2 - 5 June 2025 at the John Radcliffe.
