The University has recently launched a five-year collaboration with OpenAI to help advance research and education. This builds on the investment in AI already made by the University with the AI and Machine Learning Competency Centre, as well as enhancing the offering of the Competency Centre itself.
With this collaboration now in place, the AI and ML Competency Centre is equipped to offer more robust services to the whole University, including:
Widespread availability of ChatGPT Edu: In partnership with OpenAI, the Competency Centre is able to provide approved licences for ChatGPT Edu. These licences are offered at a discounted rate compared to purchasing licences outside of the centre, as well as having greater data protections through our agreements with OpenAI. Through these licences, users will have access to OpenAI’s latest models.
If you're interested in ChatGPT or generative AI more generally, the centre can help you to understand the impact on your research, teaching or professional work and help explore how these new resources can become accessible for your team.
OpenAI API Access: If you're a developer or researcher who is interested in creating customised tools based on ChatGPT or the OpenAI API you can now request access to the API and the Competency Centre will consider your application for approval.
Research grant funding: Through the NextGenAI initiative, Oxford researchers working on collaborative projects with OpenAI will be able to access research grant funding. This will be allocated by the AI and ML Competency Centre, led by their Steering Group; the process for this will be announced later in the 24/25 academic year. Researchers interested in this are welcome to reach out to the Competency Centre to receive more information once it becomes available.
If you have questions about the deployment of GenAI at Oxford, the AI and ML Competency Centre is available to discuss these and work with you on safely implementing GenAI tools in your workspace.
