Statutory professorships have been a significant part of the university's academic structure for centuries and there is a rich tradition of many being named after prominent figures and benefactors. As such the positions attract academics of the highest calibre, with an international level of academic excellence and a world-leading research reputation.
The cohort of 21 individuals who were appointed as Statutory Professors during the 2023/24 academic year includes 8 women and 13 men. They offer expertise from a wide range of diverse fields, including neuroscience, women’s history, numerical analysis and anthropology.
Professor Anne Trefethen, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (People & Digital), said:
It is our pleasure to welcome new Statutory Professors who bring with them a wealth of global and institutional experience, and celebrate the remarkable colleagues who have been promoted to Statutory Professor level from within the University. We look forward to their contributions towards enriching our transformative research programmes and inspiring the Oxford community.
