Please see the message sent to all staff and students on 7 August 2024
The violence and unrest across the UK in recent days has caused distress and concern for many staff and students across the University.
The University condemns in the strongest possible terms racism, Islamophobia and violence. We are committed to ensuring all students, staff and visitors can feel safe and welcomed here within the University.
At present, Oxford and surrounding areas have not seen the violent scenes we have seen elsewhere. However the University is in active communication with the police and local authorities, and we are monitoring the situation. Updates will appear on this page.
Reporting an incident
If you become aware of an incident on University property, contact Security Services in the first instance.
We encourage that any criminal matters are reported promptly to the police and the University is notified.
Staff support
Staff may seek support from their line manager or department. There are a number of welfare services available to provide support, confidentially and free of charge, including our Employee Assistance Programme which is available 24 hours a day. The Looking after you webpage summarises these.
If you feel that current events may have any impact on your work, please speak to your line manager.
If you are a visitor, please speak to your host who will be able to signpost support.
Student support
There are a number of welfare services available to provide support to you, confidentially and free of charge. Your college welfare team may also offer additional services and we would urge you to contact them in the first instance. You can also approach your college tutor in the first instance for pastoral guidance and, if necessary, the senior tutor of your college.
The Oxford SU Student Advice service is available to all students.
