Keeping Oxford Secure

Oxford Secure banner in blue, featuring the text 'be part of the human firewall to protect the university from cyber attacks and data breaches. All staff must complete the Information Security and Data Privacy training every 12 months'.

The Information Security and the Information Compliance teams are proud to announce the brand-new Information Security and Data Protection staff training course.

Why has the training changed?

This new course replaces the previous Information Security and Data Privacy Staff training in CoSy, which was created in 2019. Cyber security threats and data protection expectations continue to evolve rapidly, particularly since the pandemic, and we need training that is up to that challenge.

We want the training to promote a sense of active vigilance amongst everyone in the collegiate University. We want you to know what is expected of you and the University, to be alert to the threat of cyber-crime and to have sufficient knowledge to identify incoming threats. We want you to know what to do if you encounter a situation and to be up to date with the latest data protection legislation.

The new training reminds you to stop and think before you act.

The new training is designed to:

  • Be an engaging experience using animations and quizzes
  • Help you keep yourself, and the University’s data, secure
  • Keep you alert to the latest cyber threats
  • Be available direct from your mailbox with one click

The University Registrar, Gill Aitken, has been a supporter of the new training since the beginning. She says:

By taking the time to complete this course, you are helping Oxford University become better prepared and more aware of the cyber security threats and the data privacy risks that we all face.

All of us know from the press, from social media and government that there are huge costs, disruption and harm caused by cyber-attacks and data breaches, and here at Oxford we have many attempted attacks every day.

By improving your understanding of the risks and how to deal with them you are helping to keep everyone safe online, keep our reputation intact, protect our research data and avoid the risks of significant harm to our people and the University.

- Gill Aitken, University Registrar

What can I do to stay safe online?

As well as taking the Information Security and Data Protection training annually, there are a number of key things that everyone needs to know to keep themselves and our data safe – please visit the Oxford Secure webpage for more information.

Let’s act as a joined-up human firewall to keep everyone, and the University, cyber secure.
